This circuit is used to further understand a diode and how it works. This particular example is half-wave rectified. The waveform begins at 0 (because shortly after that current is induced) and it stays above the 0 x-axis when the diode is forward and when it is backward it will not induce any current (though the values will appear negative in the waveform)
